It's comforting to know I'm part of something that has a long and distinguished heritage. It makes me feel safe and secure; in fact the exact opposite to the true nature of the business itself! Storytelling has been bequeathed across millennia, and the 'stages' on which these stories have been performed has varied from caves and camp fires, to asphalt and amphitheatres. So the term 'the boards', a usage supposedly dating from the mid-1700s, references the planks of wood laid to create the stage of a theatre. And the idiom 'treading the boards' means to act on the stage. Welcome to my world.
